Within the industry there has never been a baseline determination of what massage therapy is comprised of, what it's scope is, and most importantly what are the skills and knowledge that MT's need to be effective/competent/skilled. The group is comprised of high level members of the MT community and have been meeting since July 2009. This will be the reference point for all aspects of massage with federal, state, local agencies. By all means, read the document and GIVE FEEDBACK through the website. These folks are open to changing anything seems out of line and even things like sources and bibliography are open to feedback. Where is this heading? It will be used by the FSMTB to help draft a "model practice act", will be used by insurance providers to verify scope of practice, and it will help create portability from state to state so that folks who have to jump hoops to get licenses in other states will only have to apply and pay if they meet the standard requirements (education, testing, licensure in another state).
The final will be introduced in Seattle at the Highlighting Massage as Complementary and Integrative Medicine. Maybe we'll see you there? May 13-15, 2010.
